Marrakech is a bustling and vibrant city with narrow alleys, wide boulevards, and a chaotic charm. Whether you're exploring the medina or heading to the airport, here's how to navigate the city efficiently using local transportation.
1. Petit Taxis (Small Taxis)
Petit taxis are the most common and affordable way to get around Marrakech. These small, red-colored taxis are ideal for short trips inside the city. Make sure the driver uses the meter — or agree on a price before the ride. They can fit up to 3 passengers.
2. Grand Taxis (Shared Taxis)
Grand taxis are larger and usually operate between cities or to outer districts like Palmeraie or the airport. They are shared with other passengers and don’t use meters. You can also hire one privately for longer trips.
3. Buses and Local Transport
Marrakech has a public bus system run by ALSA. Tickets are very cheap (about 4 MAD), but buses can be crowded. They are useful if you're staying far from the center.
4. Horse-Drawn Carriages (Calèches)
For a more scenic experience, take a horse-drawn carriage around the medina walls or Jardin Majorelle. Prices should always be negotiated beforehand, and rides are best at sunset.
5. Airport Transfers
The Marrakech Menara Airport is only 15–20 minutes from the city center. You can take a grand taxi (fixed rate ~70 MAD), book a shuttle bus, or arrange a private transfer via your hotel.
6. Walking the Medina
Many of Marrakech’s highlights are located inside the medina — a pedestrian-friendly maze of souks, riads, and cafés. Bring comfortable shoes, stay aware of motorbikes, and consider hiring a local guide on your first day.
7. Ride-Hailing Apps
Apps like Heetch and Roby are now available in Marrakech. Uber and Bolt do not operate here yet. These apps offer safer, fixed-rate options in modern cars.
